Downtown Royal Oak is one of Metro Detroit's most active restaurant, bar, and entertainment districts. The walkable downtown core runs roughly six blocks along Main Street between 11 Mile and 13 Mile Roads, with parallel commercial activity on Washington Avenue and the side streets between them. Royal Oak became Metro Detroit's de facto suburban night-out destination in the 1990s and has held that position since — dense bar density, mid-priced restaurants, easy parking in public structures, and a young-professional crowd that fills the streets on weekend nights.

Royal Oak Music Theatre is the neighborhood's main concert venue (1,700 capacity, indie and alternative rock plus EDM and comedy programming). Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle on Troy Street is Metro Detroit's flagship stand-up comedy club. The Royal Oak Farmers Market — a covered market hall on Troy Street directly across from the Music Theatre — runs weekends through the year and hosts events outside the standard market hours. The Detroit Zoo, technically in Royal Oak though it sits west of the downtown commercial district, brings additional event traffic during programming weekends.

Restaurants run the full price range. Top-end options include Bistro 82, Townhouse, Vinology, Fifth Avenue, and Ronin. Mid-range covers Pronto, Pronto Royal Oak, Lily's Seafood, Ale Mary's, and Andiamo. Bars on Main Street range from the Old Shillelagh (Irish pub) and Fifth Avenue (gastropub) to high-end cocktail spots and college-style bars near 11 Mile. Coffee shops and casual cafes fill in the daytime gaps. Many restaurants are dog-friendly on their patios, which makes summer evenings a popular dog-walking destination.
