Ford Arts, Beats & Eats is one of the largest festivals in Metro Detroit, held in downtown Royal Oak every Labor Day weekend (Friday through Monday). The four-day festival combines a juried fine arts show with over 200 artists, a food festival featuring more than 50 Metro Detroit restaurants, and a music festival programming 200+ acts across multiple outdoor stages. Attendance regularly exceeds 350,000 over the four days, making it one of the largest community festivals in the Midwest.
The festival uses the entire downtown Royal Oak street grid as its venue — Main Street and the surrounding blocks close to vehicle traffic and become a pedestrian zone for the weekend. The food vendors set up in restaurant booths along the streets, the arts vendors fill a multi-block grid of tents, and the music stages position themselves at the major intersections and in city parks. The Detroit Zoo, just west of downtown Royal Oak, runs cross-promotion programming during the festival weekend.
Practical notes: admission is a small per-day fee with discounts for advance purchase. Food and drink are purchased separately from individual vendors using cash or cards. Parking near downtown becomes nearly impossible after Friday afternoon; the festival publishes shuttle locations and recommended off-site parking. The music stages programming runs from noon through 11 PM each day; the arts tents are noon to 9 PM. The festival's web site (artsbeatseats.com) posts the year-specific lineup, festival map, and shuttle routes in the weeks leading up to the event.
