The Detroit Auto Show — formerly the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) — is one of the largest auto shows in North America, held annually at Huntington Place (the convention center on Detroit's riverfront, formerly Cobo Hall and then TCF Center) in downtown Detroit. The show was historically a January event, with separate press preview, industry, and charity preview days followed by 9-10 public viewing days. After pandemic disruption in 2020 and 2021, the event moved to a September format briefly and has continued evolving its scheduling.
The show features major automaker booths — the Detroit Three (Ford, GM, Stellantis), import brands, and luxury makers — each showcasing new model reveals, concept vehicles, and existing lineup walks. Test drives on indoor tracks, interactive exhibits, and a substantial classic-car display from the Detroit Historical Society round out the floor space. Public attendance ranges from 700,000 to 800,000 visitors annually, drawing automotive enthusiasts, industry professionals, and Detroit-area families.
Practical notes: public viewing day admission is purchased through the official Detroit Auto Show website. Parking is in the Huntington Place attached structures (expensive on event days) or street parking in surrounding downtown Detroit blocks (cheaper but harder to find). The People Mover's Cobo Center stop drops you at the front entrance, as does the QLINE streetcar via the Larned stop. The show floor takes 4-6 hours to walk through if you want to see everything; food courts inside the convention center are open during public hours.
