The Detroit Grand Prix is the IndyCar Series race held annually on a temporary street circuit in downtown Detroit, currently configured on a 1.7-mile course through the streets of the central downtown area including Jefferson Avenue, Atwater Street, and around the GM Renaissance Center. The race moved to its current downtown configuration in 2023 after running on Belle Isle from 2007 through 2022; the downtown course is a return to the original Detroit Grand Prix format that ran from 1982 through 1991.
The race weekend includes three days of programming: Friday practice and qualifying, Saturday Indy NXT (the IndyCar developmental series) race plus the main IndyCar qualifying session, and Sunday's headline 100-lap IndyCar race plus supporting events. Beyond the racing, the weekend includes paddock walks, driver autograph sessions, and the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix Charity Ball as a separate Friday-night fundraiser.
Practical notes: general admission tickets get you access to multiple vantage points along the course perimeter. Reserved grandstand seats at specific corners are sold separately. Parking is in downtown Detroit structures; many lots within the race course interior are inaccessible during race weekend, so park on the perimeter. The QLINE streetcar runs through the area with adjusted service for the race weekend. Food and beverage vendors set up throughout the spectator areas. Ear protection is recommended for proximity to the track — IndyCar engines are loud.
