America's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Thanksgiving morning (late November) · Detroit

America's Thanksgiving Day Parade has run in downtown Detroit on Thanksgiving morning every year since 1924 — making it one of the country's three oldest Thanksgiving parades (alongside Macy's in New York and the 6abc Dunkin' Donuts Parade in Philadelphia). Produced by The Parade Company, Detroit's nonprofit parade and event organization, the parade steps off at 8:50 AM at the corner of Woodward and Kirby and travels down Woodward Avenue through Midtown to Campus Martius in downtown Detroit. The route runs about 1.5 miles and the procession takes roughly two hours.

The parade features giant character balloons (a signature element since the 1940s — the Parade Company's helium balloon program is among the largest outside Macy's), elaborate themed floats built in The Parade Company's River Rouge workshop, dozens of marching bands from across Michigan, the famous Big Head Corps (a Detroit tradition where costumed walkers wear oversized papier-mâché heads), distinguished marshals, equestrian units, and the closing Santa Claus float that officially launches the Detroit holiday season. The parade is broadcast live on local TV and streamed nationally, and draws roughly a million spectators along the route in person.

Practical notes: free to attend along Woodward Avenue. Most spectators arrive between 6:30 and 8:30 AM to claim a curb spot; dress in layers since Thanksgiving in Detroit can range from 25°F and snowing to 50°F and clear. Bleacher seating (paid, reserved) is available at premium viewing zones — those tickets sell out by mid-October. Parking is in the downtown structures and Midtown surface lots. The QLINE streetcar runs but service is heavily disrupted on parade day (the streetcar route IS the parade route). The Turkey Trot 10K/5K runs the same morning on a route that loops downtown before the parade — many participants stay to watch. Full route map, balloon list, and reserved-seating info post at theparadecompany.com.
