Eastern Michigan State Fair

Late July through early August · Imlay City

The Eastern Michigan State Fair is one of the oldest continuously-running fairs in Michigan, dating back to 1883 when the Imlay City Driving Club leveled off a track for buggy races. A year later the Imlay City Agricultural Society was formed — covering Lapeer, Macomb, Oakland, and St. Clair counties — and the society's first formal fair took place in October 1896 on the south half of what is still the current fairgrounds. The fair has run nearly every year since, and today draws roughly 60,000 paid admissions over its five-day August window — equivalent to more than two-thirds of Lapeer County's total population.

The fair is managed by the Lapeer County Agricultural Society and held at the Eastern Michigan State Fairgrounds, a 47-acre exhibit-and-entertainment complex in Imlay City that operates seven months of the year (the fairgrounds also hosts smaller off-season events — livestock auctions, gun shows, holiday markets). Programming hits the traditional state-fair beats: 4-H youth livestock competitions and showcases (cattle, hogs, sheep, goats, poultry, rabbits), a full carnival midway with rides and games, grandstand entertainment (concerts, demolition derbies, monster trucks, tractor pulls), agricultural exhibits, baking and crafts competitions, and the fair-food gauntlet that anchors the experience as much as the headlining acts.

Practical notes: gate admission is modest with significant discounts for kids, seniors, and weekday afternoons. Midway rides require separate wristbands or per-ride tickets purchased on-site. The fairgrounds entrance is at 810 W Borland Rd in Imlay City, just off I-69 (exit 168) — easy reach from Metro Detroit, ~50 minutes from downtown Detroit and ~30 minutes from Lapeer. On-site parking included with admission. Bring sunscreen, comfortable shoes, and cash for smaller midway vendors. The fair's official site (emsf.org) posts the year's full schedule, grandstand entertainment lineup, and entry forms for livestock and exhibit competitions a few weeks before opening.
