Cliff Bell's

Cliff Bell's is a historic Art Deco jazz club in downtown Detroit's Park Avenue district, opened in 1935 by Clifford Bell and operated nearly continuously since (with a closure in the 1980s through early 2000s before its current ownership reopened the venue). The intimate L-shaped room — capacity around 100 — retains the original 1930s interior of dark wood, gold leaf, and brass details, and is one of the few Detroit nightclubs from the prohibition era still operating in its original form.

Programming is live jazz, nightly. The headliner schedule books touring acts on the national jazz circuit alongside the rich local Detroit jazz scene that has shaped American music for a century. Sunday and Monday nights typically run the Detroit Jazz Society jam sessions, where the city's jazz musicians sit in for extended sets. Tuesday through Saturday brings booked headliners — singers, instrumentalists, fusion groups, and Latin jazz acts. The Detroit International Jazz Festival's surrounding programming uses Cliff Bell's as a satellite venue during the Labor Day weekend festival.

Practical notes: reservations are recommended, especially for weekend headliner shows — the small room sells out for high-profile acts. Park in the Park Avenue structures or street parking ($10-20 evening rates). The QLINE streetcar's Grand Circus Park stop is two blocks away. The food menu is a New American small-plates and entrée selection that runs alongside the music; the cocktail program is strong and stays open until last call. Cover varies by act, typically $10-25.
