Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle

14 upcoming events · Royal Oak, MI · 310 S Troy St, Royal Oak, MI 48067

Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle has been Metro Detroit's flagship stand-up comedy venue since 1979, currently in its downtown Royal Oak location on Troy Street. The 300-capacity room is a classic comedy-club setup — tables and chairs facing a small stage, two-drink minimum, a strict no-talking-during-the-show policy. Bookings are split between nationally-touring headliners (Wednesday through Saturday) and the Open Mic Showcase (Sundays and select Tuesdays) where local and emerging comics work out new material.

Past performers include most of the major American stand-up names of the last four decades — Jerry Seinfeld, Tim Allen, Dave Chappelle, Sarah Silverman, Bert Kreischer, and many more, often before they became household names. Tim Allen famously developed his stand-up career at the Comedy Castle in the 1980s. The current ownership has kept the booking style and venue character largely consistent across location changes; the room has moved a few times within Royal Oak over the years.

Practical notes: reservations are recommended for headliner shows, especially weekends — the room sells out regularly. Parking is in the Royal Oak public structures or street parking ($5-15 evening rates). The downtown Royal Oak bar district is one block away for pre-show drinks. Shows run 75-90 minutes; the 8 PM show is standard, with 10:30 PM late shows on Fridays and Saturdays. Two-drink minimum applies; food menu is available before and during the show.
